This Job Description may be adjusted by the Headteacher according to the changing needs of the school. This post is subject to the conditions of employment contained in the Jebel Ali School contract and to work in line with new COVID guidelines in supporting students and staff.

Role Summary: To work under the instruction / guidance of the Whole School Inclusion Director , SENCO and senior staff to create programmes, to enable access to learning for pupils with SEND, EAL and pupils with EMA and to assist the teacher in the management of pupils with EAL and pupils with EMA and to work in line with new COVID guidelines in supporting students and staff.

Role Responsibilities:

  • To assist the Core Leadership Team in ensuring all pupils can fully access the curriculum by:

  • Supporting Teaching and Learning for Children with SEND:

  • Offer high quality and appropriate teaching support to all children receiving Learning Support (LS).

  • Follow the guidelines as set out in the LS procedures for the school.

  • Assist the SENCO with evaluations of new and existing pupils who may be in need of additional support.

  • Effectively create and manage Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for all pupils with SEND receiving additional support for their learning and Individual Behaviour Plans (IBPs) where necessary.

  • Undertake structured and agreed learning activities/teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to pupil responses.

  • Ensure IEPs and IBPs are reviewed termly and realistic but challenging targets are set in order to enable further progress to be made.

  • Together with the SENCO, provide an accurate Learning Support register for the school.

  • Supporting First Wave support for pupils with EAL/EMA:

  • Liaise with the NBLA in evaluating the needs of new and existing pupils identified as being EAL and/or EMA.

  • Liaise with staff to adapt planning and create first wave support intervention plans for those pupils identified as EAL and those identified as EMA.

  • Track and monitor the effectiveness of first wave support for those pupils identified as EAL and those identified as EMA.

  • Lead CPD for EAL and EMA with staff.

Establishing Relationships:

  • Work closely with class teachers.

  • Work in partnership with the Year Leaders and Deputy Headteacher to ensure children meeting the criteria for various levels of support are assessed promptly and action taken as necessary.

  • Liaise on a regular basis with other Learning Support staff to ensure the smooth running of the department.

  • Work closely with parents for the benefit of their children, arranging regular meetings and case conferences as required.

  • Ensure there is a smooth transition between the key stages by regular communication regarding Year 2 children moving to Year 3 and Year 6 children moving to High school.

  • Assist parents with school transfer if necessary by offering help, support and advice.

  • Establish good relationships with pupils, staff, parents and Governors.

  • General

  • Together with the SENCO audit resources and manage the annual order for the SEN Department within timescales set out by the Senior Leadership Team.

  • Ensure school policies are adhered to and that planning is in line with NC and National Strategies.

  • Assist the Primary Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher in managing the admission of pupils to the school.

  • Assist with Assessment and Reporting across the school and to liaise with the coordinators as necessary in order to improve tracking and target setting.

  • Support the use of ICT in learning activities and develop pupils’ competence and independence in its use.

  • Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school.

  • To keep up to date with Educational issues.

The post holder is expected to comply with any reasonable request from the Primary Leadership Team to undertake work of a similar level that is not specified in this job description. This job description may be amended at any time following discussion between the HT/Line Manager and will be reviewed regularly.


  • Qualified Teacher Status (UK degree with QTS or UK degree with UK based PGCE or degree recognised in the UK enabling the individual to teach).

  • Recognised qualification in an area of SEN.

  • Must be on spouse or dependent  sponsorship/visa as no visa is provided with this position.


  • Have successful experiences of working with EAL students, students with SEND and those with gifts and talents. 

  • A strong focus on the pastoral care of children, understanding the balance between academic and social progress and support, as well as the ability to identify safeguarding concerns.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a positive approach to both individual and collaborative professional development. 

  • UAE Teacher Licence (desirable).
